A Life of Service to Polk County
Colleen Burton’s connection to Polk County extends well beyond elected office. For decades, she has worked with local nonprofit, civic, workforce, charitable, and community organizations dedicated to strengthening the area and expanding opportunity for its residents.
Colleen and her family made their home in Lakeland, where she became deeply involved in the organizations and initiatives shaping the community’s future.
Community Leadership
Before serving in Tallahassee, Colleen worked directly with organizations addressing some of Polk County’s most important community needs.
She served as executive director of Polk Vision, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Imperial Symphony Orchestra. She has also participated in local workforce and economic-development efforts and currently serves as a member of the VISTE Board.
These experiences gave Colleen a close view of the challenges facing families, employers, nonprofit organizations, healthcare providers, and community leaders throughout Polk County.
Public Service
Colleen represented Polk County in the Florida House of Representatives from 2014-2022 before continuing her public service in the Florida Senate.
In the Senate, she serves as chair of the Committee on Health Policy and Vice Chair of the Judiciary Committee. Her legislative work has addressed senior care, healthcare access, workforce development, consumer protection, housing assistance, public safety, and support for vulnerable children and families.
Focused on Polk County
Colleen’s approach to public service is informed by her community experience and by the residents, families, organizations, and local leaders she works with throughout Polk County.
Her priorities include affordable living, accessible health care, strong schools, workforce opportunity, safe communities, and responsible growth.
